Choi Kwang Do Grading
In Choi Kwang Do, your progress in learning the art is marked by the type of belt that you are eligible to wear. The Choi Kwang Do grading system is very straight forward, designed to denote seniority as well as the essential qualities of humility and leadership.
The highest rank in Choi Kwang Do is the 9th DAHN (9th Degree Black Belt), which is the highest rank and is held, at present, only by Grandmaster Choi. Fifth DAHN (5th Degree Black Belt) and above denotes a Master, while Eighth and Ninth DAHN indicate the Rank of Grandmaster.
The belts used in Choi Kwang Do are divided into two distinct types - solid belts and senior belts.
The solid belts are entirely one colour (such as the beginner level white belt) and denote a student who is still learning the fundamentals of that belt.
Senior belts (such as white belt with black stripe) represent the higher level of that belt which means that the student has learned the Basics of this belt and is now working towards performing them to a higher standard. Becoming a Choi Kwang Do Black Belt
The Choi Kwang Do grading process marks the achievements of the student, in learning the fundamental external, and internal, skills necessary to become a Choi Kwang Do Black Belt. Remember, achievement is not just based on a student’s ability to kick and punch perfectly, but that student must also demonstrate the key internal qualities that Choi Kwang Do is based upon, namely;
HUMILITY HONESTY GENTLENESS PERSEVERANCE SELF-CONTROL UNBREAKABLE SPIRIT As a white belt As a beginner student, or white belt, you will begin to progress through the system by learning sets of skills, called belt assignments, which correspond to belt colour - of course as you advance the belt assignments become progressively more complex and demanding.
As a beginner (White Belt), your assignment will generally consist of the basic movements practiced by all students at the beginning of class, a pattern, and a defence drill. After repeating this basic assignment enough times to develop proficiency, your Instructor at the Cassar Academy may determine your readiness to undertake a grading!
You will first be required to undertake a pre-test process to evaluate your progress and to provide some feedback on what you need to work on before you can be permitted to test. Once you are deemed ready, you will undertake a promotional test, or grading, at which you will be judged not just on what you demonstrate on the day, but also on the attitude and determination you have demonstrated throughout your training.
The process is fun and immensely self rewarding. As you teach your body new skills you might never have imagined being able to do, you will experience a sense of confidence and self-belief that will continue to motivate and support you as your progress in the Choi Kwang Do family.
We hope to see you soon and remember, we offer a free introductory class so that you can experience for yourself, firsthand, the benefits of Choi Kwang Do.
